Excerpt from Handcraft in Wood and Metal: A Handbook of Training in Their Practical Working for Teachers, Students, & Craftsmen
The authors of this work have endeavored to demonstrate the educational and cultural merits of handcraft as a subject. One of the prejudices against handcraft or so-called "manual work" has been the notion that it holds more value from a physical than an educational or cultural standpoint, resulting in "handcraft" in schools being too frequently categorized as mere "carpentry".
The authors believe that lessons based on the historical phases of craftwork, particularly in the development of furniture and metalwork construction types, as well as the evolution of tools from prehistoric times, along with the study of simple applied art in historic work, will significantly enhance the value of handcraft in schools.
While the work has been primarily prepared for teachers, the aim has been to make the subject matter valuable and interesting to craftsmen, and a useful guide for pupils or students. As an aid to class teachers in providing technical support in central schools, the authors hope this work will find a place among the books pertaining to craft and general education.
Furthermore, the authors hope that this work will be regarded as a collection of suggestions and data, rather than an attempt to produce a series of models. They believe that the artistic aspect of handcraft has been largely neglected in the past, and while not claiming any special merit for the design of the models discussed, they have endeavored to incorporate some artistic merit into the designs, and have avoided the meaningless joints and collections of joints that have only limited mechanical value.
The authors think that the historical phases of craftwork, particularly in the development of types of construction in furniture and metalwork, and the growth of tools from prehistoric times, together with the study of simple applied art as displayed in historic work, will do much to increase the value of handcraft in schools. They have prepared this work primarily for the teacher, but with the aim of making the treatment of the subject such as to render it of value and interest to the craftsman, and a useful guide for the pupil or student.
As an aid to class teachers in helping on a technical side in central schools, the authors hope this work will find a place among the books pertaining to craft and general education. They further hope that the work will be regarded as a collection of suggestions and data, rather than an attempt to produce a series of models. The authors believe that at least one aspect of handcraft has been almost entirely neglected in the past, i.e. the artistic side, and while not claiming any special merit for the design of the models dealt with, they have endeavored to embody some artistic merit in the designs, and have avoided the meaningless joints and collection of joints which have only a limited mechanical value.
